RESEARCH/

THE BIKE FRAME. THIS RELATIVELY COMPLEX STRUCTURE IS MADE UP OF SIMPLE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN TUBES. WE WANT TO TAKE THIS METHOD OF DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION, AND APPLY IT TO OUR STUD WALL FRAME, WHERE THE STUDS, NOGGINGS, TOP/BOTTOM PLATES ARE EACH INTERLOCKING CYLINDRICAL TUBES. JUST LIKE THE SIMPLE BIKE FRAME. STRONG AND EFFECTIVE.

ONE OF THE KEY FUNCTIONALITIES WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN OUR DESIGN, IS FOR IT TO NOT ONLY BE A VIABLE SOLUTION AS A CONSTRUCTION METHOD, BUT ALSO FOR IT TO BE ABLE TO HARVEST RAINWATER. WE WANT TO LOOK AT HOW OUR CLADDING SYSTEM CAN CAPTURE THIS RAINWATER, AND USE IT TO PROVIDE IRRIGATION TO SURROUNDING VEGETATION. ONE OF THE POSSIBILITIES WE ARE THINKING ABOUT, IS USING THE CYLINDRICAL CARDBOARD TUBES AS A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OVERHEAD GUTTER AND THE GROUND BELOW, A.K.A. AS A DOWN-PIPE CLADDING SYSTEM.

THIS IS AN UNDER SLAB WATER TANKING SYSTEM FOR RAINWATER BY BOG2 ARCHITECTS. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR A JUNCTION BETWEEN DOWNPIPES, AND UNDER FLOORING WATER TANKS. THIS MEANS RAINWATER CAN BE  HARVESTED AND THEN USED FOR IRRIGATION LANDSCAPE PURPOSES. IN OUR DESIGN WE NOT ONLY NEED TO THINK ABOUT HOW WE CAN USE CARDBOARD AS A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO CLADDING A BUILDING, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO THINK ABOUT HOW WE CAN INTEGRATE WATER HARVESTING INTO OUR DESIGN.

BACK TO BASICS/

BEFORE OUR GROUP CAN LOOK AT CONSTRUCTING THE ECO WALL, WE FIRST NEED TO GO BACK TO BASICS AND LOOK AT THE CONVENTIONAL TIMBER STUD WALL CONSTRUCTION. ALTHOUGH THIS MAY BE SIMPLE, IT HOLDS THE KEY STRUCTURAL PRINCIPLES WE REQUIRE TO CONSTRUCT WITH CARDBOARD. STUDS, NOGGINS, JAMBS, TOP AND BOTTOM PLATES, THESE ARE STRUCTURAL ITEMS THAT COMBINED ALLOW FOR STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY AND THE STABILITY OF A WALL.  EVEN THOUGH WE WILL BE BUILDING WITH CARDBOARD TUBES, THESE COMPONENTS REMAIN THE SAME, EVER IMPORTANT IN THE SHAPING OF OUR DESIGN.

HAVE CHOSEN TO RESEARCH, TEST, AND CONSTRUCT A TREATED CARDBOARD-CLADDING WALL SYSTEM, COMPETE WITH A WINDOW OPENING AND ROOF/EAVES JUNCTION. THIS DESIGN EXPERIMENT WILL BE ASSESSED UNDER THE ESD SUBJECT 5183 AT RMIT'S 2nd YEAR, ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF BUILDING DESIGN PROGRAM.

WE CANT WAIT TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES CARDBOARD HOLDS AS A SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT, AND WILL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE WITH OUR FINDINGS.
